ARTIST :
This is the work of Umezaki Shujaku, born in 1896 in Uwajima. He was originally a student of Hashimoto Kansetsu in Kyoto and continued to live in Kyoto thereafter. He was a regular exhibitor and prizewinner at the national Nitten/Teiten organization. His works were accepted for exhibition with the organization in the following years; 1922, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 1931, 36, 37, 1942, 1951, 53, 54, 55, and 1956.

AGE :
mid 20th century

SIZE :
The image measures 20.5'' by 14'' (52 by 36 cm). The scroll measures 56.5'' by 20'' (144 by 50 cm)

DESCRIPTION :
A tentative title written on the end of the box reads 'Shizuka kyo' or 'Quiet valley' though the brilliance of the colors and the depth of textures tends to give a far different impression as the forest works its way up above the river.

TECHNIQUE :
It has been painted on paper with thickly applied pigments built up both over and under applied silver leaf.

CONDITION :
The work is in very good, original condition. It is complete with a 'futomaki' or wooden roller which clamps around the bottom roller of the scroll ensuring that the painting is not wound too tightly. This works to ensure that the pigments remain intact. The scroll is then stored within a double kiri-wood box. The brocade mounting is finished with ivory rollers.
