ARTIST : Signed Kokuzan, the artist remains anonymous as is so often the case with works of this era.
AGE : circa 1915/20
SIZE : Each screen stands 69'' high and measures 68'' across (175 by 173 cm).
DESCRIPTION : A wonderful mid Taisho period pair of two-fold screens. The genre scene shows a mother and her two young children visiting a shinto shrine, most likely connected to the girl's day festival in March. Nostalgic in sentiment the scene is classical Taisho period escapism into the ideals of childhood and femininity. The work is beautifully brushed and the vivid hues of the lush composition bring to mind the growth and opportunity of spring and youth.
TECHNIQUE : ink, gofun and pigments on silk
CONDITION : Good original condition. There are a few water marks present and also some handling marks around the edges though these imperfections are almost entirely consumed by the artwork.
