PRICE : $7200
Item Number : 1046180
ARTIST : As with most shunga, particularly from the Edo period, the artist has chosen to remain anonymous. There were numerous attempts to suppress shunga by the Tokugawa shogunate though they likely had little lasting effect.
AGE : First half of the 18th century
SIZE : The original section of the hand-scroll, less the ends, measures 144'' by 10.6'' (365 cm by 27 cm).
DESCRIPTION : A wonderful hand-scroll of erotic paintings or 'shunga' from the first half of the 18th century. Old, rare and exquisitely painted with high quality ink and pigments. The twelve images form a complete set and are representative of the twelve months of the year.
TECHNIQUE : Ink, pigments and gofun on paper.
CONDITION : Painted on paper the images are in reasonably good condition. Losses of gofun (a white gesso-like substance made from ground shell) are apparent. The scroll itself is in good condition, perhaps most recently re-mounted some fifty years ago.
