ARTIST : It is the work of Nakajima Raisho (1796-1871), an artist who excelled in the painting of fish. He was a Maruyama school painter who originally studied under Watanabe Nangaku and later under Maruyama Ozui. His paintings are in the collections of the Ashmolean, the Imperial Palace Kyoto and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. See Roberts p.127.
AGE : Mid 19th century
SIZE : The image measures 48'' by 12'' (122 cm by 30.5 cm). The scroll measures 73.5'' by 12.5'' (187 cm by 32 cm).
DESCRIPTION : Fallen maple leaves scatter the surface of a pond as a carp gently breaks the surface seeking air. The painting speaks of the change of seasons, beyond the stifling heat of summer.
TECHNIQUE : ink and color on paper
CONDITION : The painting is in very good condition. It was remounted during the second half of the 20th century using Meiji period cloth and presents very well.
