ARTIST : A quality work in all respects though the artist remains unidentified. The signature reads Sen Soshi, with the two seals immediately below that reading Gen Kishi and Kunbo respectively. The lower right seal reads Senan.

SIZE : The image measures 33'' by 15'' (83 by 39 cm). The scroll measures 65'' by 21'' (166 by 54 cm).
DESCRIPTION : A painting from the Nanpin or Nagasaki school of bird and flower painting which originated in Nagasaki in the mid 18th century. The style featured meticulous realism of birds, flowers and animals coupled with a strong sense of volume imparted to trees and rocks, creating highly decorative works whose roots lie in Chinese bird and flower painting. Here a pair of mandarin ducks are depicted under a blooming cherry tree obscured by mist. They represent prosperity and fidelity based on the belief that they mate for life and will perish if separated.
TECHNIQUE : Ink, color and gofun on silk
CONDITION : The painting is in good condition. There are small insect holes running through the left side of the painting. The painting was last re-mounted during the first half of the 20th century.
