DESCRIPTION : A poem by Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875) brushed with ink on paper. Obo no kane no kikoe keru goro. Yoshimizu no/kane hibiku nari/ ide ware mo/kasumi ni koke no/ kinukurabe sen. Rengetsu nana-ju-nana sai. ''Upon hearing the sound of a Temple Bell.....At Yoshimizu/A bell sounds - In this mist I too/could be mistaken/For a rock clothed in moss. Rengetsu, age 77''. Yoshimizu is a mountain area near Kyoto famed for its temples and shrines and the beauty of its many cherry blossoms in spring. Rengetsu went there to visit the cherry blossoms. At dusk, the mist became so thick that it was hard to distinguish anything clearly. The sound of the temple bell suddenly resonates through the mountain….Translation and commentary by John Stevens.

CONDITION : The painting is in good condition. There is one poorly restored tear in the top right corner. Restoration is an option, as is enjoying the work in its present condition.
