| This is an intriguing Taisho era (1912 –1926) scene featuring two marauders about to alight on a procession. The procession is carrying a phoenix topped palanquin, which is most likely to be holding the statue of a deity. The motifs n the flags are dragons chasing tama balls. The rocky overhang and gnarled, ancient trees have been done in sumi-ink, whilst all non-natural elements have been rendered in soft water colors – an engaging contrast. It is signed and stamped Issui, who we believe is a rather obscure artist by the name of Hagino Issui. Issui was from Kyoto and a student of Kawabe Kakyo. The crease toward the bottom of the scroll is the only conditional problem. There is no foxing present. The scroll is retaining its original silk brocade mounting, which is in excellent condition. Overall the scroll measures 76 by 20.5 inches. | |||||||||||||
