| Painted in September of 1942, this is a Nihonga work by the artist Chokusai. It is complete with its original signed and stamped double storage box. The rising sun sits low over the horizon, its brilliance reflected in the crests of the waves. A seductive haze, accentuated with gold dust, is cast upon the deeper reaches of the vivid ocean. The pulsating waves, intense in their movement and rhythm, crash over the exposed rocks in the foreground. Sprays of gofun (a shell based gesso like substance) accentuate their immediacy and power. Chokusai (Uenaka Chokujiro) was born in Nara in 1885. He studied under a number of artists, including Fukada Chokujo, Hashimoto Gaho and Yamamoto Shunkyo. Chokusai exhibited at the Nitten in 1931. The painting is in good condition, exhibiting very slight foxing. It displays perfectly in its original brocade mounting. The work has been rendered with pigments and gofun on silk. The scroll measures 58 by 26 inches. | |||||||||||
