Abstract SUMI BAMBOO Scroll on PAPER JAPANESE
A playfully abstract rendering of bamboo done in sumi on paper. A baby bamboo shoot has been softly brushed in the background, whilst in the foreground is a wonderfully gnarled and wizened bamboo trunk, its leaves reaching into the top of the frame. A very interesting and original scene. It was painted during the earlier part of the 20th Century by an artist named Otake Somekichi. The work is signed Chikuha which is his painting name. He was born in Niigata in 1879. He first studied at the Nanso school (Sumi-e) under Unseki and later moved to Tokyo to study under Kawabata Gyokushou and Kobori Tomone. The picture has a full silk brocade mounting and is finished with bone rollers. The scroll comes complete with its original, signed kiri-wood box. The paper has retained its whiteness but it has succumbed to random, noticeable foxing. Overall it measures 74 by 16.5 inches.
