The fox, a complex creature in Japanese folklore, is often assocaited with the worship of Inari Daimyojin, a Shinto/folkloric rice diety. Although the origins of this little white fox may lie with the Inari diety, the artist, Uemura Eitaro, has placed it at the center of a delightful Shijo/Maruyama School insprired work. The full moon has been silhouetted with washed ink, wispy green reeds hint at a soft and inconsistent breeze. Individual strokes of gofun account for the exceptional detail of the fox.

TECHNIQUE :
Ink, color and gofun on silk

The painting is in good to very good condition. Three or four small dark insect marks are present. The brocade mounting and bone rollers are original to the painting and in fine condition.
