ARTIST :
The work is signed Roshu (1767-1847), with the top seal reading Nagasawa and the bottom seal Rin. He was a Maruyama School painter who specialized in kachoe or bird and flower paintings. He is the student and adopted son of Nagasawa Rosetsu.

AGE :
Earlier 19th century

SIZE :
The painting measures 39 by 16.5 inches. The scroll measures 69 by 20 inches.

DESCRIPTION :
A superbly detailed tiger by Nagasawa Roshu, the student and adopted son of Nagasawa Rosetsu. A similar work by Rosetsu is held within the Price Collection, and is presently traveling Japan with 'The Age of Imagination' exhibition. This tiger by Roshu is more contorted and less predictable. Feline in appearance, with conspicuously large limbs and tail, it is captured scratching under its chin with great satisfaction.

TECHNIQUE :
ink and color on silk

CONDITION :
The mounting is simple and in quite rough condition. A number of insect holes are present in the upper section of the mounting and small insect marks are present. The painting itself is in good condition. There are a few faint marks present and there is one noticeable crease running vertically from the left side of the painting to the tiger's chin. It would benefit from a re-mounting, although it does present quite well as it is.
