ARTIST :
Kyujo (1744-1802) was a Nagasaki style painter who resided in Edo. He was a samurai attached to the Shogunate. He is primarily noted for his bold Kachoe and paintings in the Chinese style, although toward the end of his life he concentrated on landscapes and more subdued, thinner ink works. He studied under So Shiseki (1712-1786), who is famed for having carried the Nagasaki style to Edo. The top two seals remain unread. The bottom seal reads Naomichi, which is one of Kyujo's numerous painting names.

AGE :
Second half of the 18th century

SIZE :
The scroll measures 73.5 by 24.5 inches. The painting measures 39 by 19 inches.

DESCRIPTION :
An audacious 18th century ink painting by the samurai artist Kyujo To. An intimidating hawk looms large over the coastal scene, dominating the painting. Perspective has given way completely to its imposing presence.

Ink on paper

CONDITION :
Significant repairs over the years have resulted in the painting being reduced in size. This has impacted upon the seals to an extent. There are numerous sections of paper replacement and restoration of vertical and horizontal creases. The latest restoration was undertaken quite recently, and the brocade mounting is equally new.
