DESCRIPTION :
An early and rare ink image of a dragon silhouetted against the night sky. Stylistically akin to the austerity and seriousness of the art work of the 15th or 16th centuries. The majority of ink painters through the 16th century were trained and patronized by Zen temples. In Zen Buddhism the dragon came to be associated with the ascending spirit of the freed soul and was often encountered in Japanese Zen temples accompanied by the tiger, a symbol of earthbound enlightenment. It was then and still is painted on the ceilings of Buddhist temples as a protective image.

TECHNIQUE :
Ink on paper

CONDITION :
Framed with magnificent Edo period brocade, the painting has undergone extensive past restoration work in the form of the reinforcement of creases and cracks. Losses and retouching are present. The painting can certainly be hung and enjoyed as is, although it would benefit greatly from further restoration.
