ARTIST :
The signature reads 'Gain Seito Yoshitame' - Seito meaning student. Yoshitame is the art name Ukita Ikkei (1795-1859). Along with painting he was also known as a calligrapher. He is known to have learned Yamato-e from Tanaka Totsugen.

The painting measures 7 by 34 inches. The scroll measures 7.7 by 59.5 inches.

DESCRIPTION :
A painting of a group of circling swallows by the artist Yoshitame. The summer scene is dynamic in composition - the birds simplified and stylized in form.

TECHNIQUE :
Painted with ink and touches of color on silk.

CONDITION :
The condition of the painting is reasonable. The scroll hangs well. Marks are present through the middle of the lower third of the painting. It has been remounted at least once in its life with every effort being made to preserve the original brocade.
