DESCRIPTION :
A pair of hawk screens from the first half of the 19th century bringing to mind the art of the Kishi school though the artist remains a mystery. The confrontation between the fearsome hawks is quite remarkable as one openly covets the others prized position. It is a highly original and dynamic work of art, and one that was unmistakably painted for the warrior class.

TECHNIQUE :
Ink, color and gofun on paper

CONDITION :
The paintings exhibit losses, discoloration and stains. They were remounted early in the 20th century. The screens are quite light although they are structurally sound and present the paintings well.
