ARTIST : Inohara Taika (1899-1980) was well known for his paintings of birds and flowers or kacho-e. He studied under Yamaguchi Kayo and Tsuchida Bakusen, whose influence is apparent in this work. Taika went on to become a judge of the national Nitten exhibition.

SIZE : The screen measures 66 inches across and stands 65 inches tall.
DESCRIPTION : A two fold nihonga screen from the early Showa era by Inohara Taika. In response to the ominous black skies of the monsoon season an enormous eagle has inflated itself and is calling to the heavens. Vivid greens detail the hardy foliage clinging to the mountainside, the brilliant blue pigment cascading water. The setting sun is barely visible at the lower left though it casts a rich golden glow through the ink washed sky.
TECHNIQUE : Ink, pigment, gold and gofun on silk
CONDITION : The screen is in good original condition. There is some minor splitting and lifting of the silk observable around the hinge and light water splashes to the bottom left
