DESCRIPTION : An 18th century scene depicting the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. An interior scene of a splendid inn overlooks Tokyo bay whilst a myriad of tiny figures dot the beaches and boats are in sail in the distance. The magnificence of the architecture is represented using one-point perspective to emphasize the three dimensionality of the scene. This style of painting made its way to Japan in the 1740's through Chinese adaptations of Western pictures and had considerable influence on later Japanese landscape paintings.

CONDITION : The painting has just been restored and is ready for either mounting as a scroll or framing.
