Dating to the first half of the 17th century, this is a highly distinctive samurai battle screen. Unusually large and animated characterizations of the warriors and their horses are a feature of the screen as is the use of a variety of cut and patterned pieces of gold leaf somewhat randomly decorating the open ground. The scene is depicting the opening volleys of the battle of Yashima with the ambushed Heike returning from the sea to meet the rival Genji warriors on land. The Heike were waiting in their boats in a neighboring inlet, expecting to ambush the Genji boats though miraculously the Genji marched to Yashima overland and turned the tables. The attack was concentrated around the temporary court of Emperor Antoku which is represented in the center of this screen.

Ink, pigments and gold foil on paper
