GORGEOUS Screen RINPA school MEIJI Japanese

This is a gorgeous two panel Rinpa school screen from the Meiji period. It is an autumn scene showing an abundance of kiku, or chrysanthemums, in full bloom over their stepped bamboo trellis. Sprays of susuki, or Japanese silver grass, fill the background. It is not silver leaf but rather silver paint applied on paper. The kiku vary in shade from soft yellows through subtle pinks and oranges to pure white. The flowers have been applied using thick, heavily textured gofun, or powdered clam shell. The bamboo trellis beams have been richly applied with raised gold paint. Mineral pigments of various thickness and textures have been used in all other areas of the painting. It is a classic Rinpa school work. The screen has been completely re-framed and re-backed. It originally was a part of a six panel seasonal screen. It had some tears around the trellised section which have been repaired. Also in the bottom right corner of the screen it appears that a young child has scratched the gold (please see the photographs). The entire screen has been professionally restored, its condition will remain exactly as it is now. Overall the screen measures 51 inches wide by 65 inches tall.
