ARTIST : Yamamoto Shunkyo (1871-1933) studied under Kono Bairei, Nomura Bunkyo, and Mori Kansai. He was one of the founders of the modern Kyoto School and a member of the Imperial Art Committee. He is held in very high regard both within Japan and internationally. His works reside in numerous museums both domestically and abroad including the Kyoto City Art Museum, MFA Boston and the National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo. See Roberts pp.196.

SIZE : The scroll measures 77.5 by 13 inches (197 by 33.5 cm). The image measures 46 by 12 inches (117 by 30.5 cm).
DESCRIPTION : A horse depicted from the rear in ink on a paper field by Yamamoto Shunkyo. Its wonderful sense of movement and life are portrayed with surprisingly few brushstrokes executed with great skill and surety.
TECHNIQUE : ink on paper
CONDITION : There are a few patches of discoloration on the painting though they are quite light. The painting has very recently been re-mounted, likely by machine. It is finished with older bamboo rollers.
