Suio Genro (1716-1789) was one of Hakuin Ekaku's most prominent disciples. A highly accomplished artist, he adopted Hakuin's 'early' style and was also acquainted with the artist Ike no Taiga . Suio was quite an eccentric and his nick name was 'foot-loose' Suio; he never did zazen or read sutras, and enjoyed drinking sake.

18th century

DESCRIPTION :
A superb image of Kannon the goddess of compassion by the zen priest Suio Genro. Genro portrays the deity in a very human manner, exuding warmth and kindness. The brush strokes are vigorous, natural, and beautifully shaped whilst the painting's flowing vertical composition gives it a sense of vibrant movement. The inscription reads: ''She looks about all sentient beings with compassion; She is an unlimited ocean of good fortune for us all''.

ink on paper

The painting is in good, original condition although it will need to be re-mounted. I suggest having the work done here in Kyoto. Please contact me in regards to this.
