ARTIST : Suio Genro (1716-1789) was one of Hakuin Ekaku's most prominent disciples. A highly accomplished artist, he adopted Hakuin's 'early' style and was also acquainted with the artist Ike no Taiga . Suio was quite an eccentric and his nick name was 'foot-loose' Suio; he never did zazen or read sutras, and enjoyed drinking sake.

SIZE : The image measures 11'' by 47.5'' (27.5 by 121 cm). The scroll measures 13.5'' by 71'' (34.5 by 180 cm).
DESCRIPTION : A superb image of Kannon the goddess of compassion by the zen priest Suio Genro. Genro portrays the deity in a very human manner, exuding warmth and kindness. The brush strokes are vigorous, natural, and beautifully shaped whilst the painting's flowing vertical composition gives it a sense of vibrant movement. The inscription reads: ''She looks about all sentient beings with compassion; She is an unlimited ocean of good fortune for us all''.
