ARTIST : The painting is likely by an artist named Igarashi Katei from Echigo prefecture on the island of Shikoku. He worked around the tempo era (1830-1844) and was known for his paintings of beautiful ladies (bijin-ga) and birds and flowers (kacho-e).

DESCRIPTION : A beautiful chinese lady or 'bijin' dressed in fine robes astride a willful horse equally resplendently attired. The finely detailed and realistic brushwork draws its inspiration from the Maruyama school of art. The beauty herself is almost certainly a representation of a legendary Chinese figure.
TECHNIQUE : ink and color on silk
CONDITION : The work is in very good condition. The brocade is highly complimentary though it dates to the work's most recent mounting some 30/40 years ago.
