ARTIST : It is the work of Yamamoto Tokoku (1839-1890), real name Yamamoto Ryo. He was a Maruyama School painter born in Kyoto. His teachers included Kawakita Shunkoku and Komai Korei. Along with portraiture he was particularly noted for his landscapes and kacho-e. See Roberts p.180. He has inscribed this handscroll 'Okyo-zu bo', which essentially means 'yearning for Okyo'. Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) is a giant amongst Japanese artists and was the founder of the Maruyama School of Art. The effects of his work were still being felt throughout Japan well into the 20th century.

DESCRIPTION : A continuous handscroll depicting twelve acts of lovemaking, the more unusual scenes include an older lady, french kissing, a lustful priest and finally a sexual aid.
